About the Content

This video retells the original Brothers Grimm story of Hansel and Gretel in German, focusing on the narrative and key vocabulary for language learners. The story begins with a poor family – a father, mother, and their two children, Hansel and Gretel – struggling to survive. When taxes increase, the desperate mother suggests abandoning the children in the forest so the parents can have enough food. The father is initially reluctant but eventually agrees, fearing they will all starve otherwise. Hansel, overhearing their plan, secretly gathers small stones to mark their path. The next morning, the parents lead the children deep into the forest, leaving them by a fire with a small piece of bread, promising to return. Hansel and Gretel fall asleep, and upon waking, find themselves alone. Thanks to Hansel's cleverness, they follow the trail of stones back home. The father is overjoyed, but the mother is annoyed. Soon, food becomes scarce again, and the mother insists on abandoning the children once more. This time, Hansel tries to collect stones, but the mother has locked the door. The next day, as they are led even deeper into the forest, Hansel uses his breadcrumbs to mark the path. However, when they try to follow the trail back, they discover birds have eaten all the crumbs, leaving them lost. After three days of wandering, a bird leads them to a house made of bread, cake, and sugar windows. Ravenously hungry, they begin to eat the house. An old woman emerges, inviting them inside, offering food and beds. However, she is a wicked witch who built the house to lure children, whom she loves to eat. The witch immediately locks Hansel in a cage and forces Gretel to cook for him, intending to fatten him up. Every morning, the witch, who has poor eyesight, checks Hansel's finger to see if he's getting fatter. Hansel, being cunning, offers her a bone instead of his finger. After four weeks, the impatient witch decides to cook Hansel regardless. She instructs Gretel to prepare the oven, then tells her to check if it's hot enough, hoping Gretel will climb inside so she can trap her. Gretel, sensing the trap, pretends not to know how to get in. Frustrated, the witch demonstrates, and as she leans into the oven, Gretel shoves her in and slams the door shut, burning the witch alive. Gretel frees Hansel, and they discover the witch's house is filled with jewels and treasure. They fill their pockets and flee. They encounter a large river without a bridge, but a white duck helps them cross, ferrying each child individually. Eventually, they find their way back home. Their father is overjoyed to see them, and they learn their mother has died. Hansel and Gretel present the jewels and treasure, ending their family's poverty and ensuring they never have to worry about food or money again. The video concludes by asking viewers which version of Hansel and Gretel they know and their thoughts on the
